I’ve always been a fan of trench coats. They are stylish, if sober, and renowned for playing well with other items in an outfit. Serviceable and durable, they blend with just about any style and rarely demand center stage. No wonder they are an iconic image for amateur detectives. But when you add gingham to this design, you end up with something that leaps out of its genre, proclaiming it will not go gentle into the good night. It won’t sit on the sidelines. A black-and-white checked trench is a force of nature. It has all the versatility of a beige trench: I’ve paired it with pink, fuchsia, red, green, and blue. No one will mistake you for Nancy Drew, but someone, somewhere will say, “Love your coat.” That’s the magic of gingham. It adds cheer and a lightness of being.
I paired a Sherman Gingham Trench Coat (it runs large, by the way, but I liked the extra room for layering) with a white Ralph Lauren tee (T.J. Maxx) and white NYDJ Ami Ankle Skinny Jeans (the Lift Tuck® Technology is something to behold, and the comfort is unparalleled). Just for fun, I added yellow pumps (Calvin Klein), an old, beloved Kate Spade straw tote, and a paw-print scarf. I found the hat at Amazon for $16.99. If you’re in the mood to get “checked up,” you can find a shopping guide at the bottom of the post.
